Aralıklı oruç (16:8) herkese uygun mu?Is 16:8 intermittent fasting right for everyone?

It brings structure for some people and is simply unsuitable for others. Here are answers to the questions our clients ask most.

What does 16:8 mean?

It means having nothing that contains energy for 16 hours a day and fitting your meals into an 8-hour window. For example, eating between 12:00 and 20:00, then drinking only water, unsweetened tea or black coffee until the next noon. Other models include 14:10 and 5:2, which restricts intake on two days a week.

Is it better for weight loss?

In most randomised controlled trials, intermittent fasting led to similar weight loss as daily calorie restriction. Its advantage comes less from a magical effect on metabolism and more from some people finding it easier to eat less overall. In a 2022 trial, adding time restriction to the same calorie target brought no extra benefit.

In short: if it is sustainable for you, it can work. If you struggle with it, a plan built on regular meals gets you to the same place.

Who should avoid it?

  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women
  • People with type 1 diabetes
  • People taking insulin or sulfonylureas (risk of low blood sugar)
  • Anyone with a history of eating disorders
  • Children and teenagers under 18
  • People who are underweight
  • People taking medication that shouldn’t be taken on an empty stomach, or with certain chronic conditions (without their doctor’s approval)

Caution

If you take diabetes medication, don’t start a fasting window without talking to your doctor; your blood sugar could drop dangerously low.

What can I have during fasting hours?

Water, sparkling water, unsweetened tea, black coffee and unsweetened herbal teas. Coffee with milk, fruit juice, honey or “just a spoonful” of peanut butter all break the fast.

How should I break the fast?

  • Put protein and fibre first: eggs, yogurt, vegetables, wholegrains.
  • Don’t eat quickly even if you are very hungry; fullness signals take 15–20 minutes.
  • Fit 2–3 balanced meals into the 8-hour window; grazing throughout defeats the purpose.
  • Keep drinking water throughout the day, not just during the eating window.

If you train

If you train in the morning, delaying your first meal for hours afterwards can make recovery harder. Shifting the window around your training or being flexible on training days works better.

The short answer

Intermittent fasting is a tool, not a requirement. It can work for the right people, but it doesn’t replace a good-quality diet. We recommend talking your health situation through with a dietitian before you start.
